I think the idea of your problem of practice is great. Really trying to work on students writing skills is very important since this day and age students are getting lazy due to texting language. I know for myself I would admit I am a weak writer, but what I would do well in writing was things that interested me. So what came to mind maybe as a suggestion is allow students to write about things that interest them for part of the paper. For example if you are doing a report about a country you could have them write on something that they can relate to like sports, traditions, holidays, activities, festivals etc. That way they are writing about something that is really interesting to them and then you can still have them write about other topics. I was thinking this would have hook them into their assignment.
